Chicago rules that change what goes in the dumpster
The 50% recycling rule (most homeowners are exempt)
Chicago’s construction and demolition recycling ordinance (Municipal Code 11-4-1905) makes covered projects recycle at least half of their debris and file a notarized form with a hauler affidavit within 30 days of finishing. It covers new buildings of four or more units, non-residential jobs over 4,000 square feet, rehabs that need a new certificate of occupancy, and some larger demolitions. Houses and two- and three-flats under four units are exempt, as are jobs needing only a plumbing, electrical or mechanical permit. If your job is covered, tell the dumpster company up front: you need a hauler that sorts and can sign the affidavit.
What not to put in the container
Household chemicals, batteries, fluorescent tubes and mercury items go to the City’s Household Chemicals & Computer Recycling Facility, 1150 N. North Branch Street. It is open only Tuesday 7 am–noon, Thursday 2–7 pm, and the first Saturday of each month 8 am–3 pm, for residents, not businesses. It does not take latex paint, alkaline batteries, appliances or medicines.
